Some magical places …

Some places I have stopped at on the long and winding road that have cast a spell over me, many of which I had read about as a child whose interested in people and places was very much influenced by the wonderful photographs that the National Geographic magazine has provided us with over the years:

You may be interested to know that Prof Yvonne Salmon, the occupant of Salmon’s Maternity Home [featured in your blog 29.03.2010], whose great, great grandfather, John Kinsey Salmon was one of the three officers of the East India Company directed personally by Sir Stamford Raffles to come from Bencoolen to Singapore to assist in the administration of Singapore – is at 84, living beyond the yellow door [photographed in your blog] in an interior left exactly as it was in the 50s. She phoned me this morning and I will be sending a printout of your article to her. May I attribute source to you, Mr Jerome Lim? Thank You

The wondering wanderer

Hi Peggy, thanks for the information – wow, I didn’t realise that the esteemed Prof Salmon was still living there – the building looks unoccupied! Yes, you may attribute the article to me, Jerome Lim. Would there be any possibility of me saying hello to her in person? 🙂

I visited her this morning to wish her Belated Happy Birthday. Prof Salmon’s BDay was actually on 10 Dec. She was in good spirits. She has not lost her sense of humor: saying that she’s getting younger but in the opposite direction. She could not remember my name, although she welcomed me with joy on her face and raised her cheek to be kissed. It would do her much good to have visitors as she herself said it cheers her up; and social contact may help to mitigate her dementia. What a pity to see her sitting alone (albeit with her helper) 24/7 when she still has a zest & gratitude for life. She prays and thanks the Lord constantly.
