The sun rises on independent Singapore’s 47th birthday

Photographs of the spectacular break of day I was very fortunate to have witnessed on the morning of Singapore’s 47th birthday. The first photograph was taken at 6.41 am and the last at 7.15 am and were taken at a natural beach along Singapore’s northern coastline that I hope will be left as it is …

Good Morning Jerome, you’re a great photographer, beautiful photos of the sunrise on National Day. I noticed that you (and many others) use the word birthday, and curiously, I wonder why so many people think Singapore’s national day is its birthday. To me, It is as if Singapore did not exist prior to 9 Aug 1965. Truth be known, modern Singapore was founded in 1819, so maybe it is more appropriate to celebrate 193 years of ‘foundation’ or perhaps, it is just more apt to call the day independence day or national day. To take things alittle further, perhaps we should also celebrate Parameswara or Sang Nila Utama’s visit to the ancient Tumasik and call that a birthday?

Hello Irv, thanks for your kind feedback and also your comments … I did qualify it as being independent Singapore’s 47th birthday … the 9th of August being seen as the birth of a nation that had previously not existed. πŸ™‚
